The "Ugly" Truth Behind Your Daily Skincare: What I Learned from Not So Pretty
Can we have some "real talk" for a second? Grab a coffee, sit down, and let's get into it.
I recently sat down to watch the documentary Not So Pretty, and let me tell you, as someone who is deeply committed to formulating the safest products for you, my jaw was on the floor. I usually spend my days obsessing over the perfect ratio of tallow to essential oils or making sure our labels are 100% accurate, but watching this was a massive wake-up call. It wasn't just eye-opening; it was frankly a little bit infuriating.
When we started this business in Centralia, IL, we did it because I wanted to provide affordable, natural skincare to our community. We wanted things that were safe for our families and yours. But seeing the inner workings of the "Big Beauty" industry laid bare in this documentary made me realize that the mountain we're climbing as clean beauty brands is even steeper than I thought.
The FDA Revelation: A "Suggestive" Safety Net
The most shocking part of the documentary: the part that actually made me pause the TV and vent to anyone in the room: was the revelation about the FDA's power. Or rather, their lack of it.
Most of us grow up believing that if a product is on a shelf at a major retailer, it has been vetted, tested, and "approved." We assume there's a watchdog making sure that if something harmful is found, it gets pulled immediately.
The truth is much uglier.
In the documentary, they highlight that even when harmful ingredients: we're talking heavy hitters like asbestos in talc-based powders or endocrine disruptors in lotions: are discovered, the FDA cannot force a recall. They can only suggest a voluntary recall. Let that sink in. A massive corporation can be told their product contains carcinogens, and they can basically say, "Thanks for the suggestion, but we're good."
The Small Maker Paradox
This is where the mom in me gets a little fired up. In our small business circles and maker groups, we spend so much time stressing over every single guideline. We talk about "doing xyz" correctly, staying compliant, and ensuring our handmade skincare ingredients are documented to the nth degree. We do this because we care deeply about our customers and because we respect the responsibility of what we do.
It is deeply ironic that I'm here in my workshop, meticulously melting down pure butters and oils, making sure every batch is perfect, while billion-dollar companies are operating with a "voluntary" safety net. While we focus on natural skincare benefits and total transparency, the industry giants are often hiding behind vague terms like "fragrance" or "parfum," which can mask hundreds of undisclosed synthetic chemicals.
Why "Handmade" is a Safety Standard, Not Just a Label
At Harmony Hydration, we've always believed that transparency shouldn't be optional. It should be the foundation. When you look at a jar of our tallow lotion or a bar of our soap, you should know exactly where it came from.
Our journey is often described as "Seed to Suds." Now, if you know me, you know I don't exactly have a green thumb. My ADHD makes gardening feel like a giant puzzle with missing pieces! That's why I leave the growing to the experts. Heather and Nick are the heart behind our "Seed to Suds" garden. They do the planning, the nurturing, and the therapeutic horticulture that brings our herbs to life. They even have the "fertilizer team" (our local rabbits) working overtime to keep the soil rich.
I'm the one who takes those garden-grown herbs: like our soothing Calendula and aromatic Rosemary: and turns them into the formulas you love. My goal is always the same: to find the safest, most effective option for the people who trust us with their skin.
The Reality of Daily Exposure
The research is staggering. The average person applies over 500 synthetic chemicals to their body every single day through their grooming routine. From the nails to the hair to the skin, we are constantly absorbing substances that our bodies weren't meant to process.
The documentary Not So Pretty didn't just talk about skin; it covered everything. It showed how even something as "routine" as a manicure can expose technicians and customers to chemicals linked to respiratory issues and infertility. It's a systemic issue where profit is prioritized over people.
This is why we focus on organic skin hydration and simple, recognizable ingredients. We don't need 50 ingredients to make a soap that works. We need the right five.
Pure - Simple - Honest
Reclaiming Your Routine
So, what do we do with this information? It can feel overwhelming, but the answer isn't to stop caring; it's to start choosing.
Read the Labels: If you can't pronounce it, or if it just says "Fragrance," proceed with caution. And I want to be transparent here — you will see "Fragrance" or "Fragrance Oil" on some of our Harmony Hydration labels too. The difference is in the intention and the selection process. We are incredibly choosy about the fragrance oils we use, and if you ever have concerns or questions about a specific product, we are more than happy to share the safety information for the fragrance oils we've chosen. Your peace of mind matters to us, and we will never leave you guessing.
Support Local Makers: When you buy from a small shop like ours in Centralia, you aren't just a number in a spreadsheet. You are a neighbor. You can meet the makers and ask exactly what goes into your products.
Choose Transparency: Look for brands that are open about their sourcing and their process.
We take pride in our small-batch method. Whether it's our cold process soaps or our tallow balm, each product is crafted with the knowledge that it will be used by real people with real families. We don't want a "voluntary" safety net; we want a standard of excellence that we set for ourselves every single day.
The Harmony Hydration Mission
Seeing the lack of accountability in big beauty was a massive wake-up call, but it also served as a powerful affirmation. It reminded me why we do what we do.
We use tallow because it is bio-available and incredibly nourishing. We use herbs like chamomile and mint because they have worked for centuries. We keep our prices affordable because nontoxic skincare shouldn't be a luxury reserved for the elite.
It's about balance. It's about being a mom, a business owner, and a conscious consumer all at once. It's about making sure that when we talk about "beauty," we aren't ignoring the "ugly" truths underneath the surface.
