I recently sat down to watch the documentary Not So Pretty, and let me tell you, as someone who is deeply committed to formulating the safest products for you, my jaw was on the floor. I usually spend my days obsessing over the perfect ratio of tallow to essential oils or making sure our labels are 100% accurate, but watching this was a massive wake-up call. It wasn't just eye-opening; it was frankly a little bit infuriating.

The most shocking part of the documentary: the part that actually made me pause the TV and vent to anyone in the room: was the revelation about the FDA's power. Or rather, their lack of it.

Most of us grow up believing that if a product is on a shelf at a major retailer, it has been vetted, tested, and "approved." We assume there's a watchdog making sure that if something harmful is found, it gets pulled immediately.

The truth is much uglier.

In the documentary, they highlight that even when harmful ingredients: we're talking heavy hitters like asbestos in talc-based powders or endocrine disruptors in lotions: are discovered, the FDA cannot force a recall. They can only suggest a voluntary recall. Let that sink in. A massive corporation can be told their product contains carcinogens, and they can basically say, "Thanks for the suggestion, but we're good."

This is where the mom in me gets a little fired up. In our small business circles and maker groups, we spend so much time stressing over every single guideline. That's why I leave the growing to the experts. Heather and Nick are the heart behind our "Seed to Suds" garden. They do the planning, the nurturing, and the therapeutic horticulture that brings our herbs to life. They even have the "fertilizer team" (our local rabbits) working overtime to keep the soil rich.

I'm the one who takes those garden-grown herbs: like our soothing Calendula and aromatic Rosemary: and turns them into the formulas you love. My goal is always the same: to find the safest, most effective option for the people who trust us with their skin.

The Reality of Daily Exposure

The research is staggering. The average person applies over 500 synthetic chemicals to their body every single day through their grooming routine. From the nails to the hair to the skin, we are constantly absorbing substances that our bodies weren't meant to process.

The documentary Not So Pretty didn't just talk about skin; it covered everything. It showed how even something as "routine" as a manicure can expose technicians and customers to chemicals linked to respiratory issues and infertility. It's a systemic issue where profit is prioritized over people.

A May to Remember: The Heart Behind Our Mommy & Me Collection

If you’ve been following the Harmony Hydration journey for a while, you know that everything we do here in Centralia is rooted in family. But if I’m being totally honest? This upcoming May is looking like it’s going to be less of a "gentle spring breeze" and more of a "full-blown celebration hurricane."

If you think your calendar is full, let me introduce you to the May-hem that is my family’s birthday list. We’ve got Heather’s daughter, my son, my stepdaughter, my stepson, and my husband’s other sister: all blowing out candles in the same month. It’s a marathon of cake, wrapping paper, and "Happy Birthday" choruses.

But this year, May is bringing something even more special than the usual chaos. We are officially preparing for two brand-new arrivals. My sister and my sister-in-law (who, fun fact, has been my best friend since we were literally in kindergarten!) are both due in May. We’re about to welcome a brand-new little lady and a handsome new little man into the fold, and my "Auntie" heart is already bursting.

Naturally, as the resident "product maker" of the family, my first thought wasn't just about cute onesies or nursery colors. It was: What am I going to put on that brand-new, precious baby skin?
